We can customize your professional weather station with Additional Sensors via our Weather MicroServer. For example, we offer two visibility sensor options for applications including transportation, broadcasting, solar energy, industrial automation, mining, and research, with customers such as BNSF, Johnson Controls, and CBS Television.

Option 1: Visibility Sensor (Part #82620-1DC) covers a 16 km (10 miles) range, using the same 42-degree forward scatter angle trusted by the NWS and FAA, with an ice-resistant “look-down” design built to reduce window contamination and clogging from blowing snow.

Option 2: For solar-powered stations, we offer a Low Power Visibility Sensor (Part #82620-10) with a range up to 32 km (about 20 miles), +/-10% accuracy up to 10 km, and reliable performance from -25° C to 60° C.

The visibility sensors use forward scatter technology, sending infrared light from one arm while the other receives it, measuring how much scatters off particles in the sample area. That reading translates directly into meteorological optical range, a standard measurement of atmospheric clarity.

For every professional weather station model, CWS offers the flexibility to match the right sensors to your power setup and range needs, integrating through the Weather MicroServer.

Orion 420 Weather Stations help make LASCD Water Reclamation Plants better neighbors

LA County Sanitation District has purchased seven Orion weather stations since 2011 – mostly Orion 420s – sited at water reclamation facilities. One of our technicians, Kathryn Hammond, was recently in the area and got a tour of the Whittier Narrows facility. Prior to her visit Kathryn had spoken with Albert Mata on an installation follow-up with this report: “Albert installed the system. Loves it. Was easy to install.” Carlos Alfaro, Supervisor of Treatment Plant Operations, gave Kathryn the tour, including the catwalk over the tank. (Whittier Narrows is an open tank wastewater treatment facility.) Kathryn reports that they use primarily wind speed and direction parameters to help manage for odor based on complaints from the neighbors, as well as the possibility of chemical spills. MicroServer Firmware Security Update

We have a new firmware update for our MicroServer customers with the following enhancements. 🔒 Improved Security Features – HTTPS is now supported – Enhanced authentication 💻 Easy Cloud Weather Server Setup – Users can now create a Cloud Weather Server account, which makes accessing data and registering weather stations a smoother process. MicroServer Cybersecurity Firmware Update

  The U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) Vulnerability Disclosure Program published an Industrial Control Systems (ICS) Advisory on January 6 documenting resolved vulnerabilities of the CWS MicroServer. As part of our ongoing commitment to the reliability, accuracy, and security of our products, Columbia Weather Systems engaged a third-party cybersecurity audit in August 2025 to evaluate the security of the MicroServer . In October 2025, this review identified three vulnerabilities, which CWS disclosed to CISA. Our development team acted quickly to address the findings. All identified issues were remediated and incorporated into MicroServer firmware version MS_4.1_14142. A follow-on assessment by the same third-party confirmed that the remediations were successful.
