Local HazMat Vehicle Visits Columbia Weather

As a global company, it’s not often that we get to meet our customers face-to-face. 

Last week we had a visit from Aaron Randall of Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue with their HazMat vehicle which boasts a nine-year-old Orion VM™ Weather Station. 

This particular truck crew is part of the Oregon Fire Marshal’s HazMat team and is responsible for Western Washington County through to the coast which includes a section of an important pipeline as well as several large manufacturing plants. 

Randall reported that the HazMat crew conducts drills and responds to incidents about twice a month, the most recent being a semi-truck fire with fuel spill on Hwy 26 between Hillsboro and Beaverton.

LA County Sanitation District has purchased seven Orion weather stations since 2011 – mostly Orion 420s – sited at water reclamation facilities. One of our technicians, Kathryn Hammond, was recently in the area and got a tour of the Whittier Narrows facility. Prior to her visit Kathryn had spoken with Albert Mata on an installation follow-up with this report: “Albert installed the system. Loves it. Was easy to install.” Carlos Alfaro, Supervisor of Treatment Plant Operations, gave Kathryn the tour, including the catwalk over the tank. (Whittier Narrows is an open tank wastewater treatment facility.) Kathryn reports that they use primarily wind speed and direction parameters to help manage for odor based on complaints from the neighbors, as well as the possibility of chemical spills. Heat Stress Monitoring for Worker Safety

Built to Last: BPA’s 22-Year-Old Weather Station

Back in 2003, Mike installed a Capricorn 2000 Weather Station at a BPA site. More than two decades later, it's still going strong. “I remember installing this over 20 years ago and have done very little to fix it,” Mike told us. “I still use the same system and will continue to do so.” For BPA, a major provider of hydroelectric power in the Pacific Northwest, accurate weather data is critical for tracking environmental conditions that affect transformer performance. “Our outside equipment has AC units but I need to have data on our transformers both inside and outside of the cabinets," Mike explained. “It is very important to monitor ambient temperature as we have had AC units fail.
